Why Snorkel with Whale Sharks?

Whale sharks are the largest fish species on Earth, reaching lengths of up to 40 feet. Despite their size, they are gentle filter feeders, posing no threat to humans. Snorkeling with them is a unique adventure that combines excitement with respect for nature.

Cozumel is one of the best places to experience this because the whale sharks migrate nearby during the warmer months, from May through September. This seasonal visit allows travelers and snorkelers to plan their trips around the best time to see these magnificent creatures.

What to Expect on Your Whale Shark Adventure

The full-day tour runs from approximately 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Tours are limited to 10 people per boat, ensuring a more personal and less crowded encounter. The boat is fully equipped with safety gear such as a first-aid kit, GPS, and VHF radio. A private guide accompanies the group, providing expert knowledge and ensuring safety.

Before heading out, you’ll enjoy a light breakfast at the tour pier, including coffee and pastries. Once on board, lunch is served with sandwiches, fresh fruit, cookies, soft drinks, and water to keep you energized.

The snorkeling gear—mask, snorkel, fins, and flotation jacket—is provided and required for safety and comfort. This means you don’t have to worry about bringing your own equipment.

Respecting the Whale Sharks and Their Environment

Whale sharks are an endangered species protected by Mexican law. Tours operate with strict guidelines to respect the animals and their habitat. This includes maintaining a safe distance, avoiding touching the sharks, and limiting the number of snorkelers in the water at one time.

Getting There and Additional Tips

The adventure begins early, with a ferry ride and then a van from Playa del Carmen in air-conditioned comfort. While round-trip transportation from Playa del Carmen to the marina is included, ferry transportation to Cozumel is not. You can choose from three ferry options: Xcaret, Ultramar, or Winjet. Check their schedules and rates in advance to plan your trip smoothly.

  • Bring a rash guard, hat, and sunglasses since sunscreen is not allowed.

  • Bring a waterproof camera to capture memories

  • Stay hydrated and listen carefully to your guide’s instructions

  • Dress in comfortable swimwear and bring a towel
